چکیده

Word properties like imageability and word frequency improve cued recall of verbal paired-associates. We asked whether these enhancements follow simply from prior effects on item-memory, or also strengthen associations between items. Participants studied word pairs varying in imageability or frequency: pairs were ‘‘pure” (high–high, low–low) or ‘‘mixed” (high–low, low–high) where ‘‘high” and ‘‘low” refer to imageability or frequency values and are probed with forward (A–?) and backward (?–B) cues. Probabilistic model fits to the data suggested that imageability primarily improved retrieval of associations, but frequency primarily improved recall of target items. All pair types exhibited a high correlation between forward and backward probe accuracy, a measure of holistic learning (Kahana, 2002), which extends the boundary conditions of holistic association-memory and challenges Paivio’s (1971) suggestion that holistic learning depends critically on imagery. In sum, item properties can boost association-memory beyond simply boosting target

Shape Memory Properties in Cu-Zn-Al Alloy

In this research a Cu-Zn-Al alloy is produced by melting the raw materials in an electric resistance furnace and then pouring it into a steel mould. The optimum way to achieve the final analysis in the hypo-eutectoid range is determined and the influence of the alloying element, Ti on the grain size and the shape memory properties of the samples are investigated. Solution treatment (done at 850...

Source memory that encoding was self-referential: the influence of stimulus characteristics.

Decades of research suggest that encoding information with respect to the self improves memory (self-reference effect, SRE) for items (item SRE). The current study focused on how processing information in reference to the self affects source memory for whether an item was self-referentially processed (a source SRE). Participants self-referentially or non-self-referentially encoded words (Experi...

Association between prospective, retrospective memories and job performance of nurses in the city of Ahvaz, Iran, in 2016

Background: Nurses continuously carry out several activities and need to develop certain cognitive mechanisms to be able to concentrate on their tasks. These activities and tasks affect and deal with the health and safety of people and their job performance. This study aims to investigate the association between prospective and retrospective memories and job performance of nurses in Imam Hospit...

Item-properties may influence item-item associations in serial recall.

Attributes of words, such as frequency and imageability, can influence memory for order. In serial recall, Hulme, Stuart, Brown, and Morin (Journal of Memory and Language, 49(4), 500-518, 2003) found that high-frequency words were recalled worse, and low-frequency words better, when embedded in alternating lists than pure lists. This is predicted by associative chaining, wherein each recalled l...
